The Value of a Circular Economy Approach

Robert Spencer
Director, Sustainable Development at AECOM UKI

Robert has over 20 years’ experience in environmental consulting in the UK, Nigeria and PR China. He authored AECOM’s new UKI Sustainability Policy, which includes specific commitments on delivering the circular economy and environmental net gain through our work with infrastructure clients.  Robert is also on the AECOM working group integrating Social Value into our commercial and project delivery processes in partnership with the Social Value Portal.

Robert founded and chairs the Major Infrastructure–Resource Optimisation Group (MI-ROG) and the Scottish Infrastructure Circular Economy Forum (SICEF).  These unique and award-winning infrastructure owner/operator best practice bodies are driving circular economy concepts into current infrastructure design and delivery across the UK, yielding strategic insights and innovation for future infrastructure design.

Robert has also advocated large and complex infrastructure organisations including Highways England, Network Rail, Scottish Power, SSE, Yorkshire Water and Southern Water to benefit from adopting an integrated Capitals approach on strategic infrastructure investment and design decisions.

In June 2018 Robert was appointed to chair the Environmental Industries Commission Natural Capital Task Force, which seeks to provide a voice and response from the multidisciplinary consultancy industry to government on the integration of natural capital and ecosystem services into design across the built environment and infrastructure.

His current focus is on advising and supporting the major infrastructure asset owners and operators in the UK with the challenges of sustainable development and the climate emergency.
